Cooking a mud crab can seem tricky, but with the right steps, it’s easy to prepare fresh crab meat for your favorite recipes! Here’s how to cook, clean, and prepare mud crab meat.

Ingredients

  • Mud Crab
  • Ice
  • Salt

Method

  • 1)

    Ice down the crabs in a freezer or esky to put them to sleep.

  • 2)

    Bring a pot of salted water or sea water to the boil.

  • 3)

    Add mud crabs for 11 minutes.

  • 4)

    Once cooked pop them into a salty ice bath for 11 minutes until they have chilled down to stop the cooking process.

  • 5)

    Pop your thumbnail underneath the triangular section of the body to remove the carapace.

  • 6)

    Remove the guys and gills whilst trying to keep the meet clean.

  • 7)

    Crack the crab in half then again to pop that into a clean bowl.

  • 8)

    Twist off all the legs from the body and leave those in the bowl too.

  • 9)

    Move to a bench and pick the meat from the body discarding the shell.

  • 10)

    Next use the back of your knife to crack the legs and remove as much meet as you can discarding the shells.

  • 11)

    Do one last check through your crab meat make sure there is no shell. Now you’ve got your pick of crab meat ready to eat or make your recipes.
